Get To Know: Tom Keating

The IHSAA announced Tom Keating as the sixth executive director in its history on March 13, 2019. He will succeed Alan Beste and begin serving as executive director on July 1, 2019.

Here’s a chance to get to know Tom better before he arrives in Boone.




Birthplace: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Parents: My father Tom was an immigrant from Ireland, and my mother Mildred (Mennine) was a first-generation immigrant from Italy. Both are now deceased.

Spouse: My wife is Jodi, and she’s from Maxwell, Iowa. She is an account executive for iHeart Media.

Children: Three sons. Kevin is 34, lives in Waukee, and works for Target Corporation as a project manager and executive team lead. Tim is 31, lives in Cedar Rapids, and is a partner with GK Sports, a company that runs volleyball tournaments across the country. And Ryan is 19 and attends Loras College in Dubuque. He’s majoring in business analytics and is on the Loras men’s golf team.


Q & A

What do you do when you’re not working? 

Read, attend sporting events (high school, college, or pro), golf, and travel.

Favorite college or professional sports teams?

Mostly Philadelphia teams. Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, Flyers, Villanova, and the University of Iowa.

Favorite restaurant in Iowa?

Vinny Vanucchi’s in downtown Dubuque.

Most recent book you’ve read?

“Ego is the Enemy” by Ryan Holiday.

Best lesson you learned from your first job?

I was a busboy when I was 15. You can either complain about the mess or just get after it.

If you could travel back in time, what would you tell your high school-age self?

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Stay humble. Treat people with respect.
