How to Become an Official

FOR NEW OFFICIALS ONLY!!

Would you like to be involved in sports? Do you want to be one of the people who gets into the game as an official to teach good sportsmanship, fairness, and equity?  Would you like to be a part of the education away from the classroom that shapes today’s young athletes?

Then help play by the rules and become a sports official! Men and women of all ages are needed to officiate sports-at both the middle school and high school levels.  If you love sports, have a “feel” for the game, and a basic knowledge of the rules than you can be an official! We currently license officials in 10 different sports: football, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, basketball, wrestling, track and field, tennis, and baseball. Note: No registered officials are required in Tennis and Golf but host schools (or meet manager for tournaments) must have complete knowledge of interscholastic aspect of rules).

To become an IHSAA official, you’ll need to fill out an application then take and pass an open-book rules test in the sport(s) of your choice.  Once you are licensed, you’ll need to attend an annual rules meeting that will introduce you to the latest rule changes and interpretations.
